Paint Paralysis?

paint-into-a-corner.jpg

The dizzying array of color choices and their associated names are enough to give a homeowner a case of Chromophobia – the fear of colors. How do you decide what color(s) to use when there are so many options?

Choosing the right paint color(s) for the interior or exterior of your home can be frightening.  Most of us have gone through the process to find the right paint color. I know some people who have spent hours going to paint stores looking at swatches, bringing a some home looking at them again, then painting swatches on their walls – unable to decide which is the right color.  Some have even gone as far as to paint the entire room, only to find out it was the wrong color.  That’s so frustrating.

I find it helps to bring in a 3rd party.  You can always start with your friends, but sometimes they each have their own separate opinions.  Maybe get the opinion of someone whose house/colors you like.  Other tip would be to look through magazines and tear out pages of pictures of rooms that you like.  Don’t analyze it, just do it.  Once you’ve finished, spread the pictures out, I think you’ll find a few common threads.  (ie, each of the pictures you selected have the same wall color, or each of the pictures you selected all have the same predominate color throughout the room, etc. You could also try  Benjamin Moore Personal Color Viewer where you can try thousands of Benjamin Moore paint colors on sample images of house exteriors and interior rooms, or import a picture of your own house. This inexpensive program comes on a CD, or you can download it. (Mac OS X and PC compatible). I have the program.  It’s kinda fun to play with and it can give you a general idea of what your home/room would look like painted red, yellow, green, blue, etc.  But I find that the colors you see on your computer screen are not what you’ll see of your wall, so you can only use it to get a general idea of color.  For example, if you can’t decide between painting a room red or blue, you could upload a photo of the room and try a couple varisions to see which way to go.  If you’re still at a loss and feeling overwhelmed with the hundreds if not thousands of paint color choices, get a color consultation so you can start enjoying your beautiful new space.

I want to hear about your color catastrophes.

How did you solve the problem? Or are you still trying to find the right color?

How to select colors for yourself and when to call in the professionals

Color can transform any room.  For a few dollars and a few hours you can completely change the look of a room.  I think it’s the biggest decorating bang for your buck.  Now if you could only pick a color, you could get started.

Choosing the color is definately the hardest part.  You go down to your local paint store and peruse the thousands of paint swatches.  You may know the basic color you’re looking for, but you don’t know what shade or tone of the color.  That’s why you’re at the paint store.  You’re drawn right to a couple different shades of the color.  Oh, this looks nice, oh wait this one, but then again …. you end up bringing home several swatches, only to find out when you get them home they don’t look at all like they did in the store, so you go back and get some more paint swatches.  I’ve known this to go on and on and on.  People think, “I should be able to do this, it’s only color”, but there are so many choices it can beoverwhelming.  And if you don’t even know what basic color to start with multiple the tips to the paint store 10 times over.

If you really want to select paint colors on your own, start by looking at photos in magazines and tearing out the ones you like.  Eventually, you’ll see a pattern of color and that’s a good place to start.  You can even take those photos with you to the paint store to keep your colors fresh in your mind and even compare the photo to some swatches.  Once you’ve narrowed your choices, take the swatches and look at them at home.  (VERY IMPORTANT)  I can’t say this enough, lighting is key!  Once you find a couple of colors that you think will work, go back to the paint store and order 8 1/2 x 11 color swatches of the colors you like (Kelly Moore) will order these for you). Get a few and but them on different walls of the room you’re going to paint.  This makes it much easier to make a decision than looking at a 1 x 1 swatch in between a few other colors  … yikes!  You can even take it a step further and buy either a sample size of paint (Benjamin Moore) (Ralph Lauren) or a quart and paint a swatch on the wall or purchase a piece of wall board from your local home improvement store and paint it (then you’re not living with paint swatches all over the place, and you can use it again, and again and again.

These tips have helped a lot of people, I hope it makes it easier for you, but if it’s still overwhelming get a color consultation from someone like me.  It takes all of the stress out of selecting colors and it’s actually fun!

This before photo shows they were ready to paint, but had a hard time selecting the right color, they called us into help and were thrilled with the result!

No More White Walls!

No more white walls!

Unless you’re into the ultra modern (white on white) nothing says rental more than white walls!  So, don’t be afraid, it’s only paint ~ let’s get some color on those walls! I know it’s difficult selecting paint colors.

In one of my color kits there are more than 75 shades of white. No wonder it’s hard for most people to select the right color.

Have you even gone to the paint store, selected a color swatch or two that you really liked, got it home and it looked awful?  It’s the lighting! The lighting in the store and the lighting in your home are different.  Have you ever gone to a friends home, loved a color on their walls, got the name of the color and painted it on your walls, only to find that it doesn’t look the same  or good in your home?  Again it’s the lighting.

A color that looks great in one place may not look good in another – lighting a key element.   You’ll either luck-out and quickly find the right color, need to bring home nearly all the shades in the color you’re looking for, or work with someone like me who brings the entire store to you.  I always start with Kelly Moore or Benjamin Moore, but I also work with Ralph Lauren, Behr and Valspar.
